How do the Remedies work?

  • In his book Heal Thyself Dr. Bach states that disease is the terminal stage of much deeper disorder and that the basic cause must be removed, hence it is important to heal the emotions.
  • Dr. Bach believed that an emotion could have a negative and a positive side. He talked about using the ‘opposing virtue’, which means that if an emotion is off balance the Remedy will enhance the positive side. When that is happening the negative side will automatically disappear. One example is the remedy Willow. In its negative state the person will be full of self-pity and resentment. In its positive state the person will feel forgiving. The remedy Willow will enhance the positive aspect. When that happens, automatically the negative feelings will evaporate. The remedy has this way assisted the person in question to ‘self heal’.
  • So, the remedies do not heal symptoms. They heal the emotion, which will then help to heal the underlying disease.
  • The remedies work as Type and as Mood remedies. A person may often feel anxious for loved ones. The remedy Red Chestnut given over a few weeks or months as a type remedy may alleviate this feeling slowly. When a person feels gloomy one day the remedy Mustard taken once or twice will often ‘cure’ this feeling within a hour or so. Hence it is used as a mood remedy.

How are the Remedies made?

  • The remedies are made using one of two methods.
  • Dr. Bach devised the sun method for certain plants – mostly the more delicate flowers. The sun method involves floating the flower heads in pure water for three hours, in direct sunlight.
  • And for other remedies – mostly the woodier plants and those that bloom when the sun is weak – he created the boiling method in which a remedy maker boils the flowering parts of the plant for half an hour in pure water.
  • In both cases the heat transfers energy in the flowers to the water.  The energised water is then filtered, and an equal quantity of brandy is added to it as a preservative.  This creates the mother tincture.
  • The mother tincture is then further diluted at a ratio of two drops to every 30 ml to make the stock bottles that you see in shops.
  • Making remedies is a simple process and doesn’t require special preparation or special abilities. All that is needed is willingness and understanding, along with sunshine and water, and the right plant on the right day.

How do you take the Remedies?

  • You will be given a 30 ml ‘mixing bottle’ with a dropper containing ¾ water, one teaspoon of alcohol for keeping it fresh and two drops of each remedy from the stock bottle.
  • You put four drops of the remedies from the mixing bottle into a glass of water and drink it. You need to do this minimum four times a day. First thing in the morning, just before bed and at least twice during the day. You may put it into tea or coffee if you prefer. This that means two drops of each remedy lasts about three weeks.
  • Alternatively, you may dispense two drops of each Remedy into a glass of water and drink minimum four glasses a day. This is less economical.
  • Or you may dispense four drops from the mixing bottle each time directly onto the tongue. Just make sure not to touch the tongue in order not to contaminate the dropper.
